How to calculate real margin
in dropshipping in 2026

The definitive guide to set profitable prices in Shopify and dropshipping. No theory: formulas, real examples, and the mistakes that destroy your margin.

If you run a dropshipping or Shopify store, calculating your real margin before launching a product is the difference between making money and losing it. Most beginners get it wrong because they only subtract product cost from selling price, ignoring 8 hidden costs that eat your profit.

1

The 8 hidden costs that destroy your margin

When you calculate profit, you only subtract product cost. Fatal mistake. These are the 8 costs that also eat your margin on every sale:

πŸ“¦
1. Product cost

What you pay your supplier: AliExpress, CJ Dropshipping, Spocket, Zendrop or local. The obvious one, but the rest usually missing.

🚚
2. Shipping cost

What you pay the supplier, not what you charge the customer. If you offer free shipping, this cost is 100% yours.

πŸ’³
3. Payment processor fee

Stripe ~2.9% + $0.30 (US). PayPal ~3.49% + $0.49. Apple Pay / Google Pay vary by region.

πŸͺ
4. Platform fee

Shopify charges 2% if you don't use Shopify Payments (0.5% on Advanced, 0% on Plus). WooCommerce 0% itself but you pay your own gateway.

πŸ’°
5. Sales tax / VAT

US sales tax varies by state (0-10%). EU VAT 19-27%. Outside-EU B2C sometimes exempt but customer may face import duties.

🎯
6. CPA (Cost per Acquisition)

What it costs to acquire one customer via Meta Ads, TikTok, Google or influencers. In 2026 ranges $8-25 depending on niche.

↩️
7. Returns and refunds

Between 3-8% in general dropshipping, up to 12-15% in fashion. Provision it: you lose product cost + shipping + sometimes return shipping.

βš™οΈ
8. Operating costs

Shopify $29-79/mo, apps (Klaviyo, Loox, tracking...), domain, tools, accountant. Easily $150-300/mo fixed.

What margin is actually profitable?

Your net margin (after all costs including CPA) defines whether you can scale or not. This is the scale we use to classify products:

🚨
< 15%
Loss zone

Any CPA spike or return puts you in the red. Don't scale.

⚠️
15-25%
Acceptable

Viable only with high volume and tight CPA. No room for surprises.

βœ…
25-40%
Healthy zone

Sustainable. Absorbs spikes in CPA, seasonality and returns without dying.

πŸš€
40%+
Winner product

Scalable. Bid hard on ads, build bundles, grow aggressively.

3

How to calculate minimum ROAS in Meta Ads

Minimum ROAS (Return on Ad Spend) is the ratio of revenue per dollar spent on ads at which you stop losing money. Quick formula:

Min ROAS = 1 Γ· gross margin

If your gross margin (excluding CPA) is 40%, your minimum ROAS is 1 Γ· 0.40 = 2.5x. Below that, you lose.

🎯 Practical rule

Aim for ROAS 30% above minimum. If your min is 2.5x, your target in Meta should be 3.25x as buffer against:

  • β€’ CPA spikes when scaling budget
  • β€’ Seasonality (Q4, sales)
  • β€’ Returns above average
  • β€’ Meta algorithm changes

How to use DropCalc to validate your next product

Before launching campaigns for a new product, run it through this 5-minute flow:

  1. 1
Enter the data in the calculator

Price, cost, shipping, estimated CPA. Check if margin clears 25%. If not, find another product before continuing.

  2. 2
Compare with an alternative (A/B Comparator)

Torn between 2 products? Put both in and let the comparator tell you which has better margin and minimum ROAS.

  3. 3
    Project monthly profit

Estimate realistic sales/day (not those of the Instagram unicorn) and check monthly and annual profit before starting.

  4. 4
    Save scenarios and share

Save your best scenarios and share the link with your partner or team to make data-driven decisions.

  5. 5

The Excel + PDF Guide adds a 10-product comparator, A/B/C scenarios, Meta Ads tracker and niche benchmarks. See toolkit ($29) β†’

The 5 mistakes that steal your margin

❌ Forgetting tax in the calculation

If you sell at $30 with 21% VAT, your real revenue is $24.79. Many people calculate on $30 and get the surprise at quarter-end.

❌ Not provisioning returns

Reserving 5% for returns is realistic in general dropshipping. In fashion, up to 12%. If you don't subtract it, your real margin is always lower.

❌ Calculating on gross price

Always use net revenue (excluding tax, excluding fees). Any ratio on gross price lies.

❌ Ignoring shipping time

Products with 20+ day shipping generate more chargebacks, more support tickets and worse reviews. That's hidden cost eating margin.

❌ Confusing gross margin with net margin

Gross margin = (Net price βˆ’ Cost βˆ’ Shipping) / Price. Net margin includes CPA, fees and returns. The latter is what matters for scaling.
